Climate and Seasons in the Galapagos
The Galapagos has two distinct seasons: the warm, wet season from December to June and the cool, dry season from June to November.
Warm, Wet Season in the Galapagos (December – June)
During the warm season, the islands are bathed in sunshine, with temperatures ranging from 26-30°C (79-86°F). Rain showers are common but usually brief, ensuring lush, vibrant landscapes. The sea is calmer and warmer during these months, making it an excellent time for snorkeling and swimming. Wildlife is abundant, with many species breeding during this period.
Cool, Dry Season in the Galapagos (June – November)
The cool season brings lower temperatures (22-26°C or 72-79°F) and less rainfall. However, the Humboldt Current can make the waters cooler and rougher, which might be a consideration for those planning water activities. On the bright side, the nutrient-rich waters attract a variety of marine life, making it an ideal time for divers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Exploring San Cristobal and Santa Cruz Islands
San Cristobal Island
San Cristobal, our personal favorite, is a hub of activity throughout the year. Visit between December and May to enjoy pleasant weather and witness the courtship rituals of various bird species, like the frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. If you’re a diver, consider visiting between June and November when the cooler waters attract larger marine species.
Santa Cruz Island
Santa Cruz is a year-round destination, with its famous tortoise breeding center and stunning beaches. The warm season is a great time to see tortoises in the wild, while the cool season offers the chance to observe migratory birds.
Traveling During Peak and Off-Peak Seasons
The peak seasons in the Galapagos coincide with holiday periods: mid-June through early September and mid-December through mid-January. These times bring larger crowds and higher prices. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider traveling during the off-peak seasons. But remember, the Galapagos is beautiful year-round, and each season offers unique experiences.
The Galapagos Islands promise a transformative journey to all nature lovers. As an advocate for sustainable tourism, we encourage travelers to embrace the ethos of responsible travel. Remember, your visit can have a positive impact on local communities and conservation efforts.
