This is not your average Costa Rica road trip. Beyond simply passing through the country, you’ll be welcomed into it as you embark on a tour to meet its hidden communities.
This journey is rooted in connection: with the families who cultivate yucca in the hills of Aguas Zarcas, with the women who still hand-form tortillas on clay stoves in rural Guanacaste, and with the quiet power of a community built on the slopes of an extinct volcano in Tortuguero. It’s an experience that flows beyond famous landmarks into the slow rhythms of local life — where culture isn’t performed, it’s lived.
Instead of crowded hotspots, you’ll visit places where howler monkeys outnumber tourists and where your guide might be the same person who grew the ingredients in your lunch. In San Francisco de Tortuguero, a town invisible on most maps, you’ll walk alongside a guide who can name every tree, bird, and story tied to the land. In Sarapiquí, you won’t just eat bananas, you’ll trace their journey from seedling to export, and then learn how locals are reviving organic farming to reclaim the soil.
Travel is by private transport, allowing flexibility and ease, but also access to corners most visitors never see. Whether you’re driven by a local expert or behind the wheel yourself, the roads you’ll follow connect you with both places and people. This is a Costa Rica tour told by its farmers, artisans, cooks, and conservationists, each offering you a window into their world.

You’ll start your day with a hearty breakfast before boarding private transportation to Pavona. Here, you will meet your guide, who will accompany you on a boat ride to your accommodation in the tranquil community of San Francisco de Tortuguero. Nestled on the slopes of the ancient, dormant Tortuguero Volcano, this peaceful village offers an authentic and welcoming experience, rich in cultural traditions and warm hospitality.
Enjoy the local restaurant’s specialties, where Caribbean and traditional dishes are crafted with care, ensuring excellent service and flavorful cuisine, all in a serene setting surrounded by natural beauty.
In the afternoon, you will be taken to a guided city tour of San Francisco de Tortuguero and will end the day with a relaxing stay at a charming lodge.
Today is a free day, allowing you to explore the area at your own pace. You can take a canal tour, hike up Tortuguero Hill, or simply relax and soak in the natural beauty. All meals—breakfast, lunch, and dinner—are included. You’ll spend another night at your lodge.
After breakfast, you’ll board your private boat for the return journey to Pavona. If you prefer to continue this leg of the trip by rental car, a representative will be ready to hand over your 4×4 SUV, available in both automatic and manual transmission.
From there, you’ll continue your journey to the Sarapiquí region, an ideal place to unwind and relax. Known for its lush rainforests, winding rivers, and abundant wildlife, it offers visitors an immersive experience in nature. You’ll spend the night at a comfortable hotel or lodge, with breakfast included.
After breakfast, you will embark on a fascinating banana tour, offering a deep dive into the history of bananas in Costa Rica. Through an engaging educational talk, you’ll learn about the cultural and economic significance of this fruit. The tour includes a walk through a banana plantation, where you’ll witness the entire production process, from organic planting and harvesting techniques to managing plant diseases. Along the way, you’ll also explore other crops like vegetables, sweet potatoes, yucca, and fruit trees.
Next, you’ll participate in a hands-on mini cooking class. Here, you’ll learn how to prepare and enjoy traditional Costa Rican treats such as patacones (fried plantains) with refried beans or plantain picadillo, showcasing the versatility and importance of plantains in local cuisine.
In the afternoon, your journey continues to the picturesque area of Aguas Zarcas, where you’ll be welcomed by the rural community of Coopesanjuan. This close-knit community of 64 residents primarily relies on yucca production for their livelihood. You’ll have the unique opportunity to connect with locals and learn about their way of life by staying in a family home.
In the evening, take part in a cooking class where you’ll prepare your own dinner using fresh, local ingredients. This memorable day concludes with a warm meal shared in the comfort of your homestay.
Your day will start with an exciting adventure known as “Sobrevivencia en el Bosque” (Forest Survival Experience). This fascinating activity takes place in a secondary forest, where you’ll have the unique opportunity to learn valuable survival techniques. Your guide will show you what to do if you ever find yourself lost in a forest. From identifying helpful resources to staying safe, you’ll receive expert tips on how to navigate and survive in the wilderness – an unforgettable, hands-on experience (but hopefully one you’ll never need to use!).
Once you’ve wrapped up your forest survival skills, it’s time to head toward the charming town of La Fortuna, best known for the majestic Arenal Volcano. As we approach, keep your fingers crossed for clear skies, because if the weather allows, you’ll be treated to stunning views of this iconic volcano! It’s a picture-perfect way to cap off the day’s adventure.
Today is a free day to enjoy the many exciting activities this area has to offer. You can choose to relax in the hot springs, go on a thrilling canopy tour or walk across hanging bridges. For something unique, you can join a sloth-watching tour or indulge in a chocolate tour. If you’re feeling adventurous, there’s also the option to try rafting and more.
The day is yours to explore!
After breakfast, you’ll continue your journey toward the stunning beaches of Guanacaste, a region known for its breathtaking coastline. Along the way, we’ll stop at Guaitil, a small village near Santa Cruz, famous for its rich cultural heritage. Here, you’ll meet Vladimir and his family, who will guide you through an authentic hands-on pottery experience. You’ll start by mixing clay with your feet, just as the Chorotega people have done for centuries, and then create your own clay piece using traditional methods. This unique activity preserves pre-Columbian craftsmanship, with natural pigments used to decorate the pottery.
Once your pottery is complete, you’ll help prepare your own lunch by making Tayuya, a traditional Guanacaste tortilla filled with delicious ingredients like beans and cheese.
After the cultural immersion in Guaitil, you’ll continue the journey, heading to Playa Sámara, just an hour away. This beautiful beach is the perfect spot to unwind, swim, or soak in the sun as you enjoy the peaceful surroundings of Guanacaste’s Pacific coast.
Enjoy a free day to explore Samara. Relax on the beautiful beaches, swim, or try water activities like kayaking and snorkeling. For a unique experience, take a horseback riding tour along the beach or explore the charming village with its local shops and cafés. A short drive away, Playa Carrillo offers a quieter, more peaceful beach.
After breakfast, you’ll head back to San José for your final night in Costa Rica.
Today, you will head to the airport with the necessary time to check in for your international flight back home. We hope to welcome you again in Costa Rica to continue exploring this magical country!

This trip embodies the heart of community-based tourism! By staying in family-run homestays and engaging with community-led projects, travelers directly support local livelihoods. For the cooperative Coope San Juan, tourism revenue has made it possible to fund their initial agriculture and forest conservation projects, which were once financially out of reach. Hands-on experiences—like learning Chorotega pottery in Guaitil or cooking traditional meals with local families—not only preserve ancestral traditions but also create meaningful cultural exchanges.
Beyond cultural immersion, this journey prioritizes responsible destinations like San Francisco de Tortuguero, which has embraced sustainable tourism in contrast to the mass tourism of nearby areas. Rather than large-scale development, the community co-manages Cerro Tortuguero with strict visitor regulations to protect its environment. Through the Asociación de Desarrollo Integral, tourism revenue funds conservation, waste management, and local businesses such as the Grupo Yolillal artisan collective. This shift from resource exploitation to a sustainable tourism model ensures economic growth while safeguarding the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
By choosing this trip, you’re not just exploring Costa Rica—you’re actively investing in its people, traditions, and environment.

Everyone knows her as Marielos—or Marielitos, once you get a little closer. She began her journey in tourism over twenty years ago, and it was rural community tourism that truly captured her heart. She discovered that the authenticity behind these local ventures turns a simple trip into something far greater: a life-changing experience, both for travelers and for the communities they visit.
Marielos found her own alchemical way of blending joy, comfort, and rest with the laughter and warm embraces that bring people together. When rural tourism is part of the journey, lives are transformed. Families are empowered to grow in an authentic way, and visitors leave behind a lasting bond of affection—one that stays with them forever.
For Marielos, travel isn’t just about enjoyment. It’s about creating deep, personal connections among everyone involved. That’s what makes everything feel magical, and that’s how the dream of changing the world starts to become real.

You’ll have GPS navigation and local guidance to assist you, along with our local experts who are always available to help with any questions or concerns!
The food is a mix of traditional Costa Rican cuisine and Caribbean flavors, featuring fresh ingredients like rice, beans, plantains, tropical fruits, and seafood or meat. You’ll also have hands-on cooking experiences to learn local recipes. Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated with prior notice.
Yes, this trip can be suitable for families, especially those looking for an immersive and educational experience. However, some activities, such as the survival training, may be better suited for older children or teenagers.
