About Joana

Joana, originally from Catalonia, Spain, joined our team in September 2025. With a background in biology and primatology, she has taken part in conservation projects across the globe. She also gained experience as a guide for tourists and students in both historical and natural sites, sharing her passion for culture and the environment. Her path first led her to Peru years ago, when she worked for an NGO in the Madre de Dios region, an experience that made her fall in love with the country.

Beyond her scientific background, Joana has a creative side too. She has played the violin since the age of seven and hopes to soon find one in Peru so she can pick up the bow again. Passionate about nature and hiking, she feels right at home exploring Peru’s diverse landscapes. At Impactful Travel, Joana brings her love for the natural world and her travel experience into her work in the tour platform and marketing, helping us showcase the very best of Peru.

Q&A with Joana

What is your favourite quirk about Peru?

I love that in Peru you can experience the Amazon, the Andes, the desert, and the ocean — all within the same country!
What fascinates me even more is how, in public parks and squares, you often find groups of young people gathering to rehearse traditional dances. It’s such a vivid reminder of how rich the artistic culture is here. I find it inspiring that these traditions are not only preserved but also embraced by the younger generations, keeping them alive in the most natural and joyful way.

Why did you want to work for Impactful Travel and why is sustainability important to you?

My career as a Primatologist has taken me to many corners of the world and allowed me to experience new countries from the inside — living and working alongside local people for long periods of time. This sparked my passion for traveling differently: going off the beaten path and immersing in local culture.

I’ve also seen how tourism can either harm or benefit both the environment and the people who live there, depending on how it’s managed. Living as sustainably as possible is one of my core values, and it’s also the foundation of Impactful Travel. Working here lets me combine my passions and contribute to more responsible tourism worldwide.

In your opinion, what are the key ingredients that make a journey unforgettable?

To me, the perfect journey is not so much about the highlights but about the small, genuine moments. Relaxed conversations with people from the area, a shared meal, or meaningful connections are what stay with me the most.

Nature and wildlife are also essential: nothing makes me happier than spotting an unexpected wild animal. The magic lies in letting nature follow its own rhythm — knowing that these encounters can never be guaranteed, and feeling grateful and humbled when they do happen.
