Your authentic Costa Rica tour begins in San José, where we’ll greet you warmly and get you ready for an adventure that blends wild nature, vibrant culture, and genuine local connection. Over the coming days, you’ll travel from the Pacific coast to the Caribbean, exploring places most visitors never reach, but always with respect for the communities and environments that make this country so extraordinary.
From the whale-tail beaches of Uvita to the rural hospitality of Rancho Quemado, you’ll see a Costa Rica where nature and tradition thrive side by side. You’ll hike deep into the Osa Peninsula’s primary rainforest, stay at La Leona Ecolodge on the edge of Corcovado, and spend your days spotting monkeys, macaws, and maybe even a tapir or sloth. In Boruca with the Bribri community, you’ll be welcomed into homes, learn ancestral crafts, and hear stories that keep cultural heritage alive.
Next, high in the cloud forests of Providencia de Dota, rise early to watch the resplendent quetzal in the morning light, visit a traditional sugarcane trapiche, and share meals prepared with local care. Then, instead of the busy tourist hub of Tortuguero, we take you to Lirio Lodge in the Pacuare Reserve, a wilder, quieter alternative where your stay directly supports conservation. Here, you’ll glide through pristine canals, visit turtle protection projects (in season), and kayak on untouched lagoons surrounded by rainforest.
On the Caribbean coast, Cahuita offers both national park beauty and cultural depth, from snorkeling coral reefs to an unforgettable Afro-Caribbean cooking class. Your journey ends in Ciudad Colón, where you’ll make your own colorful mask, dance to a lively cimarrona band, and celebrate the rich traditions that make Costa Rica unforgettable.

However, we understand that not everyone is comfortable driving or ready to take on Costa Rica’s adventurous roads. That’s why we offer three ways to experience the journey: as a self-drive adventure, with a rental car and dedicated driver; as a fully guided trip with private transportation; or as a combination of these options, depending on your comfort level and the regions you’re visiting.
Apart from transport, we can also offer upgraded accommodations, as well as meaningful destinations and experiences you won’t want to miss in Costa Rica. Just send us an enquiry and we’ll start designing your dream trip together.

Upon your arrival to San José, our team will be ready to welcome you at the airport and will provide assistance and all the information you need to help you get well briefed for your upcoming Costa Rica adventure. Depending on your arrival time, we can organize an optional evening tour of the town. Alternatively, if you prefer to unwind, you can relax by the hotel pool and enjoy the calm surroundings as you get ready for your upcoming adventures.
Today you are setting off on a four-hour drive from San José to the breathtaking Pacific coast! On this scenic route, you’ll cross the iconic “Crocodile Bridge,” where you can spot crocodiles basking in the Tarcoles River. If you opt for a self-drive, take the opportunity to pause and recharge at either Selina de Jacó or Villa Hermosa—two lively beach towns where local charm meets laid-back surfer culture, offering the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure.
Uvita is most famous for its small rock island right off the coast, uniquely shaped like a whale tail. Behind it, the waves formed the beach in a T-shape, perfectly complementing the detailed silhouette of a whale’s tail visible from above. At low tide, it makes for an amazing stroll along the beach! To make it even more spectacular, the backdrop of the beach is a stunningly dense jungle. Once you step away from the few buildings by the beach, all that surrounds you is pure nature, and you can walk for over an hour without any buildings in the jungle (or on the beach, for that matter). Like all around Costa Rica, the local government has been successful in protecting its natural surroundings.
Feel free to start your day a little later today, allowing yourself to fully appreciate the stunning views of this remarkable place!
After breakfast, you’ll hit the road again to reach the community of Rancho Quemado, well-known for its engaging community-based tourism initiatives. Here, you’ll have the chance to learn about nature conservation and the ancient professions that have shaped the area, all while connecting with the friendly locals who are passionate about sharing their heritage.
For sure, the most interesting experience today is the gold tour with Juan, an old cowboy with an amazing character. He will show us all the ins and outs of finding gold in the nearby stream behind his house.
After your delightful time with Juan, you’ll return to Rancho Quemado to meet your host family. If you’re feeling energized, you can choose to add extra activities at an additional cost, like wildlife monitoring or listening to fascinating anecdotes from the community’s elders! They’ll welcome you with a warm, delicious dinner, perfect for sharing stories and creating memories before you settle in for a comfy night.
This morning, after enjoying a hearty breakfast with your host family, you’ll head to Puerto Jimenez. If you’ve chosen a self-drive option, you’ll return your rental car here before continuing by private transfer to Carate, where your adventure continues with a scenic hike to La Leona Ecolodge. We’ve arranged this to ensure you’re not paying for a rental car you won’t be using over the next three days.
This morning, we kindly ask you to depart on time, as it’s quite a journey to your next destination. Consider bringing a packed lunch for the road; while there are plenty of restaurants along the way to Puerto Jimenez, options become limited after that.
You will meet La Leona’s staff in Puerto Jimenez (about a 2.5-hour drive). After checking in, you’ll be taken to Carate on a private transfer that lasts around 1.5 hours to reach the base station. In Carate, the road comes to an end, and you’ll need to walk for about an hour to reach La Leona Ecolodge. Don’t worry; a horse cart will be there to carry your luggage! We just ask that you bring only the essentials.
The hike to La Leona Ecolodge is truly breathtaking. Set at the edge of one of Costa Rica’s most protected forests, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the clear blue ocean on your left. It’s like stepping into paradise! And once you arrive at the lodge, you’ll discover that you’re living right at the boundary between two captivating worlds, each ready to provide you with a memorable holiday experience.
Please note that walking on the beach may not be possible during high tide, and that some river crossings may be challenging in the rainy season. Please keep in mind that walking along the beach can be a bit tricky when the tide is high, and during the rainy season, some river crossings might be more challenging. Always check with the local team for any safety guidance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience! If you travel during the rainy season and do not have much off-road experience, you might prefer to opt for a private transfer to Carate. If you arrive in Carate after 4 PM, you WON’T be able to safely reach the lodge, so please plan to arrive well before that time.
After you settle in, you’ll enjoy a tasty dinner at the lodge. Then, get ready for a two-hour night walk in the forest with a knowledgeable guide (group excursion). The adventure begins at La Leona creek, heading upstream to reach a trail that leads us deeper into the forest. This night walk offers a unique opportunity to observe nocturnal wildlife and experience the rainforest’s sounds after dark. You might encounter frogs, insects, snakes, and, if you’re lucky, even a tarantula. The lodge has rubber boots in various sizes for your convenience—don’t forget to bring your flashlight!
Today, you’ll head out on a two-hour hike through a high-elevation rainforest, offering a completely different experience from coastal or lowland areas. This forest is home to massive trees over 50 meters tall—like garlic trees, persimmons, ron-ron, and ceibo—many of them covered in mosses, ferns, and epiphytes.
What makes this hike special is that over 90% of it takes place in primary forest—an old-growth ecosystem that’s been untouched for generations. Walking through it means you’re stepping into a natural environment that’s full of life and always changing. You never know what you might see: spider monkeys, howler monkeys, and a wide variety of birds including toucans, trogons, tanagers, parrots, hummingbirds, and more.
It’s a peaceful, quiet trail that lets you really connect with nature. Every hike is a little different depending on what wildlife shows up—making it a unique and memorable part of your trip.
Alternative tour in Corcovado: You can choose between a half-day or full-day guided hike in stunning Corcovado National Park. A half-day hike is included in your package, but if you’re up for more adventure, we can arrange a full 6-hour version—just let us know! The hike begins at La Leona Ranger Station, following mostly flat trails through secondary and primary forest. You’ll pass through areas like Madrigal, Cementerio, Paraíso, and El Barco, eventually reaching La Hedionda Creek and walking along the beach past the rock formation known as La Chancha. Expect to see giant trees like kapok, matapalo, and balsa, plus a variety of tropical plants and vines. Wildlife sightings often include monkeys, scarlet macaws, coatis, anteaters, and many bird species. With a bit of luck, you might even spot a sloth, tapir, or puma.
Please note that while these excursions are shared experiences with other guests, you have the option to enjoy them privately for an additional fee.

Today, you’re heading to Boruca! This vibrant indigenous community in southern Costa Rica benefits from community-based tourism to help preserve their rich traditions and crafts. You’ll be warmly welcomed by a local homestay for lunch, where you’ll enjoy authentic Boruca cuisine before an afternoon packed with exciting activities.
You’ll visit the museum to explore the Boruca community’s rich cultural heritage and then join a mask painting workshop with a renowned artisan. These colourful masks are essential to their ceremonial dances and storytelling, and you’ll even get to take home your own creation!
As the day comes to a close, indulge in a delicious traditional dish of smoked meat wrapped in banana leaves at Margarita’s house. Before that, she will demonstrate the art of dyeing textiles with natural dyes, demonstrating the traditional techniques used to create these stunning fabrics. A respected indigenous leader in Boruca, Margarita has inspired her community and traveled the world to share her passion for cultural preservation. Enjoy a cozy evening with her, filled with captivating stories.
After your hike, you’ll head directly to Providencia de Dota, where your local guide David will be waiting to welcome you. You’ll begin your stay with a well-deserved homemade lunch, prepared by one of the local families.
Providencia de Dota is one of Guido & Agnes’ favorite discoveries from their 7-week exploration of Costa Rica’s hidden gems. Nestled in a remote valley in the high cloud forests, this community is known for its breathtaking scenery, strong conservation values, and genuine hospitality.
David works closely with several families to give you a unique perspective on traditional life, nature, and culture in the region. One of the highlights of your stay will be an early morning visit to a nearby farm to spot the magnificent quetzal. With almost guaranteed sightings and few other visitors, this is one of the best places to see this iconic bird—especially as the rising sun lights up its iridescent feathers. Don’t forget to take a moment to enjoy it with your own eyes, not just through the camera lens!
After some time to relax, you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner in the evening before settling in at your cozy homestay or comfortable cabin for a peaceful night surrounded by nature.
In the morning, you’ll take a short drive followed by a scenic hike through the forest to Don Carlos’ farm. While he begins milking the cows, your guide will help you set up your cameras and telescopes. It won’t be long before the first resplendent quetzal makes its stunning appearance! And what an appearance that is! This colorful bird is one of the world’s most spectacular feathered animals, boasting vibrant green and red plumage that can easily compete with the famous macaws of the lower jungle. You’ll have the perfect opportunity to relax, soaking in the views as you wait for the first rays of sunlight to peek over the treetops and start making the whole place even more mystical and dreamy. What a lovely way to kick off your day!
Later in the day, you’ll visit a traditional trapiche farm to discover a cherished practice passed down through generations. You’ll witness the traditional methods used to extract sugarcane juice, observe the process of lighting the furnace, and learn how impurities are removed. Plus, you’ll get to see how tapa dulce and the famous sobado are made, giving you an authentic taste of local culture. Enjoy a delicious lunch featuring local flavors during your visit!
In the evening, you can look forward to a charming dinner at your homestay or cabins, where you will stay the night.
From Providencia, you’ll head to Tierra Amiga (a scenic 1.5-hour drive) for a unique farm experience. The owner, a passionate young woman, will welcome you for a hands-on tour of her sustainable practices, followed by a delicious, healthy lunch with her family—complete with a refreshing glass of homemade kombucha! Afterward, you’ll continue to Turrialba (2h 15m) to relax and spend the night at a beautiful hacienda.
This morning, you’ll need to arrive at El Muelle de Goshen before 10:30 AM to reach Lirio Lodge, so it’s an early start. If you’ve chosen the self-drive option, you’ll park your car in the dock’s secure 24-hour parking lot before boarding the hotel’s fast boat.
Upon arrival, your adventure truly begins! After a thrilling 15-minute boat ride through the enchanting waterways, you’ll reach Lirio Lodge, where you’ll be surrounded by pure nature and the promise of spotting your first wild animals. Enjoy lunch at the lodge’s restaurant, offering stunning views of the lagoon and the pristine rainforests of the famous Pacuare Reserve, which are separated from the sea only by a peninsula of untouched land.
In the afternoon, embark on a cultural exploration of the charming town of Barra de Pacuare, located on the banks between the lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. Here, you’ll immerse yourself in the local community, visiting a school and exploring the village. If available, you’ll also have the opportunity to discover the important work of a turtle protection project located along the beautiful Caribbean beaches. Turtle sightings cannot be guaranteed as they are dependent on natural conditions. The best time for spotting these turtles is from March through June 30.
As the day winds down, take time to relax and soak in the natural surroundings. Enjoy options for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding, included in your package, as the sun sets, creating the perfect ending to your first day in paradise. If the weather cooperates, we’ll gather around a cozy campfire. Please note that the itinerary may vary due to weather conditions or organizational needs, and all excursions are conducted in small groups for a more intimate experience.
After breakfast, embark on an early morning boat excursion at 7:30 a.m. to explore the serene natural channels of the region. The exact route will be chosen by your guide based on weather conditions and the seasonal presence of wildlife, ensuring the best possible experience. These waterways—part of the Barra de Pacuare canals and the greater Tortuguero canal system stretching from Moín to Barra de Colorado—are a haven for biodiversity.
As you glide through this Amazon-like environment, keep your eyes open for a fascinating variety of wildlife, including crocodiles, caimans, river turtles, sloths, monkeys, snakes, and an abundance of bird species. The lush, towering vegetation lining the canals offers a vivid display of tropical rainforest at its finest—an immersive journey into one of Costa Rica’s most vibrant ecosystems.
As noon approaches, indulge in a delicious lunch before setting off again by boat to uncover the wonders of the Pacuare Reserve. Explore the unmissable Pacuare Reserve—an expanse of lush rainforest nestled between the Madre de Diós Lagoon and the Caribbean Sea. During this guided 2.5-hour excursion, you’ll experience firsthand the richness of a primary tropical rainforest, as well as the dynamic river ecosystems and wetlands that define this region. This natural sanctuary is home to a wealth of flora and fauna, with frequent sightings of all three monkey species, orioles, snakes, toucans, hummingbirds, and—if you’re lucky—sloths.
Spend the rest of the afternoon at your own pace, taking in the peaceful surroundings. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed dinner at Lirio Lodge before settling in for the night.
After breakfast, you’ll take the boat back to Goshen Pier and continue your journey to Cahuita. In the afternoon, you’ll head to Carleen Kajy’s home for an unforgettable cooking class. Carleen, a warm and engaging host, will guide you through the preparation of traditional dishes from the region. Her love for the local cuisine is evident, and she adds a personal touch to the experience with her lively humor and infectious laughter, making the class as enjoyable as it is educational.
Beyond the cooking, Carleen also shares stories about the area’s Afro-Caribbean heritage, speaking in the distinctive “broken English” of the region. Her storytelling offers a glimpse into the local culture and history, enriching the experience.
Overnight in Cahuita at a charming hotel.
Exploring Cahuita National Park is an unforgettable adventure that connects you with the pure beauty of Costa Rica. Begin your day with a walk through lush tropical trails, where you might spot howler monkeys, sloths, and vibrant birds, all set to the soothing soundtrack of the Caribbean Sea. If sea conditions allow, enjoy snorkeling around nearby coral reefs, where you can discover colorful fish, rays, and possibly even sea turtles. The experience also includes a refreshing snack and a delicious Caribbean-style lunch to complete your day.
If you have some free time in the afternoon, we highly encourage you to explore the tours offered by ATEC, a remarkable ecotourism provider offering a variety of cultural and environmental experiences!
Today, you’ll have the unique opportunity to visit the Bribri, one of Costa Rica’s most prominent Indigenous communities. Much like the visit to Boruca, this experience offers a meaningful connection to the country’s deep cultural and natural heritage—something many travelers often miss.
After breakfast, you’ll travel to the town of Bambú to meet your local guide. From there, you’ll board a traditional canoe for a scenic journey up the Yorkín River, passing through lush vegetation with views of the Panamanian mountains on the horizon.
Once in Yorkín, you’ll receive a warm welcome and a brief introduction to the community’s sustainability efforts through their local association. You’ll visit an organic farm to learn about native fruits and medicinal plants, then continue to the local school and traditional Bribri homes.
A delicious homemade lunch will be served in the community’s rustic rancho, offering a taste of authentic Bribri cuisine. In the afternoon, you’ll discover the traditional process of transforming cacao into chocolate and take part in a hands-on archery lesson using a traditional bow and arrow—an important part of Bribri heritage. Interestingly, the Bribri language shares linguistic roots with Quechua, the ancient language of the Andes, forming a fascinating cultural and historical bridge between Central and South America.
Around 3:00 PM, you’ll return by canoe to Bambú and head back to Cahuita.
For those looking to extend this immersive experience, there is also the option to stay overnight in basic accommodation—a simple yet enriching way to deepen your connection with the community and its traditions.
Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace in the laid-back Caribbean town of Cahuita. You might choose to relax at the beach, explore the charming village, or revisit Cahuita National Park for a self-guided walk. Take in the rhythms of local life, sample Afro-Caribbean cuisine, or simply relax and soak in the peaceful coastal atmosphere. Optional activities like snorkeling, surfing, or cultural tours can also be arranged locally if you’re feeling adventurous.
After breakfast, you will travel to Ciudad Colón, one of the few remaining strongholds of traditional Costa Rican mask-making.
Here, you’ll take part in a cultural mask workshop hosted by a local family. You’ll learn about the fascinating process behind these colorful and expressive masks—how they’re made, the techniques involved, and the rich history and symbolism they carry in Costa Rican traditions. The experience includes live local music, a delicious home-cooked lunch, and culminates in a traditional dance celebration with a cimarrona (a lively local band), bringing the culture vividly to life.
At the end of the experience, you will head to San José for your last night in Costa Rica.
Today, you will be taken to the airport with the necessary time to check in for your international flight back home. We hope to welcome you again in Costa Rica to continue exploring this magical country!

This isn’t just another trip through Costa Rica’s famous landscapes — it’s a deep dive into the country’s hidden heart, where culture, nature, and adventure collide. You’ll hike to a remote ecolodge where the jungle literally swallows the road. You’ll sit in the homes of indigenous communities, paint masks with Boruca artisans, and paddle upriver in a dugout canoe to share a meal with the Bribri, whose cacao traditions stretch back centuries.
In Rancho Quemado, a community at the forefront of sustainable tourism, you’ll meet locals working to protect the endangered chancho de monte (collared peccary), proving that conservation and community empowerment go hand in hand. This journey trades five-star resorts for homestays, tourist hotspots for untamed wilderness, and cookie-cutter experiences for hands-on encounters — tracking wildlife, panning for gold, and waking at dawn to watch the iridescent quetzal flash through the cloud forest.

If I had to choose one trip in Costa Rica as my favorite, it would definitely be this one. I think this itinerary is so impactful, so special, and so full of truly unique Costa Rican experiences — I could take this trip every year, haha!
I remember that when I first mentioned wanting to explore Costa Rica as the next destination for Impactful Travel, people told me, “Guido, you won’t find the kind of tourism you’re looking for.” They knew I’d be searching the country for meaningful communities, warm host families, inspiring projects, and authentic (preferably Indigenous) culture. Even so-called ‘experts’ would say, “That doesn’t exist in Costa Rica.”
Well, this trip proves them all wrong! No fewer than six local family or community destinations are combined with several other highlights in this amazing itinerary. I’m so proud of it. This journey not only lets you experience the country’s world-renowned flora and fauna, but also brings you deep into Costa Rican homes and native cultures that will undoubtedly leave you inspired.
This itinerary includes moderate hikes, including the trek to La Leona Ecolodge (about an hour of walking on the beach). While the hikes are not extremely strenuous, they require a reasonable fitness level. Some river crossings may be challenging, especially during the rainy season, so it’s best to be prepared.
Snorkeling is weather-dependent. If sea conditions are too rough, snorkeling may not be possible. However, the park still offers excellent hiking and wildlife viewing opportunities.
Accommodations range from eco-lodges (Lirio Lodge) to comfortable hotels (Cahuita). The Bribri community offers an optional homestay for those wanting a deeper cultural experience.
The best time to visit depends on your preferences. The dry season (December to April) offers sunny days and easy travel, while the green season (May to November) brings lush landscapes, fewer tourists, and great wildlife viewing, especially for whale watching (July to November).
Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but smaller towns and remote areas (like Rancho Quemado) may only take cash. It’s best to carry some colones for small purchases.
Self-driving can be a fun and rewarding way to explore the region, as there are many beautiful places to see along the way, and you have the freedom to stop whenever you want. However, the terrain can be challenging, with unpaved roads, river crossings, and steep sections, so a 4×4 vehicle is highly recommended. Prior experience with off-road driving is helpful, but as long as you plan your route carefully and stick to scheduled activities, it can be an exciting adventure.
Most accommodations, including homestays, offer Wi-Fi. However, mobile data connectivity can be limited in rural areas like Rancho Quemado and Boruca, so relying on a local SIM card may not always guarantee a stable connection.
Absolutely! You can extend your stay in Cahuita, venture into Selva Bananito for more jungle adventures, or explore other incredible destinations in Costa Rica. If you’d like, we can also combine this trip with one of our other itineraries. Let us know your interests, and we’ll tailor the journey to suit you!
Yes! The cooking class and most meals can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary restrictions. Just inform us in advance.
Yes. The visit is organized in collaboration with the Bribri people to ensure respectful engagement. Your participation directly supports the community’s economy and helps preserve their traditions.
Lirio Lodge is located in the Pacuare Reserve and offers a quieter, less touristy, and more intimate wildlife experience. In contrast, Tortuguero, while beautiful, is more developed and attracts more visitors.
Some excursions are shared, but most can be made private upon request for an additional cost.
The local families in the homestay experience primarily speak Spanish. However, they are welcoming and eager to connect, and simple communication is always possible through gestures, basic Spanish phrases, and the universal language of hospitality. When provided or requested, a guide can assist with translations if needed.
No, this trip does not visit La Sirena or San Pedrillo. While both are well-known entry points into Corcovado, they’ve become increasingly crowded due to mass tourism. To offer a more authentic and peaceful experience, we’ve chosen to explore less-traveled routes where you can enjoy the rainforest in a more intimate and undisturbed setting.
Your trip includes a guided highland rainforest hike, through a pristine ecosystem filled with towering primary forest, mosses, ferns, and a variety of bird and monkey species—ideal for those seeking connection with nature away from the crowds.
If you’re eager to experience Corcovado National Park itself, we also offer an optional hike via La Leona Ranger Station. This quieter route takes you through beautiful primary and secondary forest, with the chance to spot wildlife such as macaws, coatis, sloths, and more—all without the busy foot traffic of La Sirena. Half-day and full-day versions are available—just let us know!
For most of the trip, you can bring whatever you need, as long as your luggage stays within a reasonable size. If you opt for private transportation, keep in mind that space may be limited. Additionally, you may need to carry your bags for short distances, so we recommend using luggage that is easy to transport. For the hike to La Leona Ecolodge, a horse cart will transport your luggage, but you should pack only the essentials.
