Details of this Cusco Photography Tour Featuring Andean Plants

This experience was initially designed as a photography tour, capturing the intricate details of the remarkable plants that play a vital role in the lives of the people of Misminay, a small Andean community in Cusco. However, the reality is that the day offers much more — moments of enjoyment beyond just taking photos and learning about the uses of these plants.

From the very start, traveling from your chosen departure point to Misminay, nestled near the high plateaus of Maras, is a visually stunning experience. Upon arrival, you’ll meet and spend time with Tomasa and Edilberto, who will generously share their knowledge with you. The picturesque countryside, shaped by fields of crops and roaming farm animals, the abundant and delicious food, and the warm, respectful company of Erick — who provides translation services and guidance for those focused on capturing the details of the day—all contribute to a rich and memorable experience.

What makes this experience Impactful?

This Andes Ethnobotany & Photography Adventure in Cusco is built on collaboration, working directly with a local family of farmers while ensuring they are paid fairly. It’s a true partnership between your guide and the local people, who are the real experts in the use of plants and their role in Andean culture. Guests are consistently reminded of the invaluable knowledge these people bring to the experience. Through this immersive tour, we aim to preserve their cultural wisdom, which is gradually fading with each new generation in both the community and across Peru.

Our approach respects the natural rhythms of each season —wet and dry— by showcasing the evolving landscape, plant life, and agricultural activities month by month. Rather than altering nature, we celebrate its changes, fostering a deeper appreciation for its cycles and their importance to Andean traditions.

This experience is designed to be as authentic as possible. Local guides are not required to wear special costumes or dress in traditional vibrant clothing; instead, they are encouraged to wear what they would on any given day in the community. While the tour follows a structured route and includes key insights we aim to share, no two experiences will be exactly alike. The climate, season, and ongoing cultural activities will shape each visit, ensuring that travelers remain engaged and curious through the natural spontaneity of the day.

Tomasa, Edilberto and Erick

Erick Andia, a Peruvian photographer based in Urubamba, Cusco, honed his craft while studying photography in Lima, Peru’s capital. Over the years, he has captured the country’s vibrant gastronomic scene, working directly with some of its top chefs. For nearly three years, he served as the on-site photographer at Virgilio Martínez’s MIL, where he built close relationships with families in the surrounding communities while contributing to the ethnobotanical project and the publication of the book ‘Cuarenta Plantas Útiles’.

Tomasa and Edilberto, a lively pair of grandparents in their 50s, radiate warmth and charm. Engaging with them in Spanish adds an enriching dimension to the experience—one that few have the privilege to appreciate.

Erick’s connection to Tomasa and Edilberto runs deep; as the godfather to their granddaughter, he is committed to supporting their success and financial stability. At the same time, he is passionate about preserving the ancestral knowledge of the native plants that define their unique ecosystem.

Their collaboration with Impactful Travel began in late 2024, sparked by a shared vision of both life and business, as well as meaningful connections. This tour serves as the “pilot” episode of what promises to be a series of unforgettable experiences, offering an authentic glimpse into life in the Peruvian Andes.

about this Cusco Photography Tour

Is the tour physically demanding?

Yes, the tour can be physically demanding, mainly due to the high altitude. However, you don’t need to be in exceptional shape to enjoy it. With a steady pace and a love for adventure, most travelers find the experience both manageable and rewarding!

What’s the weather and altitude like?

The weather varies significantly throughout the day, so layering is key. Mornings can be chilly, while midday can be very warm. The highest altitude we’ll reach is 3,700 meters (12,140 feet), so it’s important to take it slow and stay hydrated to adjust comfortably.

Is this tour only for photographers?

No, this tour is for everyone! While photographers will love capturing the intricate details of Andean plants and culture, hikers and nature enthusiasts will also enjoy the breathtaking landscapes, rich traditions, and immersive experience in the highlands.
